Interview experience:
I posted my resume on line and was called the next day to come in for an interview. I spoke with Francene who was really nice, she gave me a kind of preinterview on the phone. It was just general HR questions about how I heard about Colgan and why I wanted to work for them and where I saw myself in five years. No technical questions. Then she gave me some background and info about the company and the position and asked me if I as still interested. I said yes, she then emailed me an E-ticket on USAir. I flew into DCA and was picked up in a Colgan van and taken to Manassas, which was about 20 min. away from D.C. After waiting for abbout 5 min. I was called into a room and was fingerprinted for the background check. When that was done Chuck Colgan came out and introduced himself. He basicly asked me the same stuff as Francene did over the phone, he then asked me if I planned on being a pilot in the future. I told him that I did but I only had my commercial/Instrument rating right now. He gave me some great encourgement and told me to go ahead and get my multi add on while I was dispatching and build between 50 and 100 hours then reapply for a pilot position. He said if I did that that my chances were really good that within a year or so I would be flying right seat for Colgan. I pretty much decided right then that I wanted to work here. Mr. Colgan then took me over to the Dispatch office to meet Dave who was the Dispatch supervisor. The dispatch office seemed really busy and I ended up having to wait about an hour before I could talk to him. Dave gave me the technical portion of the interview which basicly consisted of reading a METAR/TAF, telling him when I would file an alternate (123 rule) and explaining the 1 nav aid 2 nav aid rule. Very simple and to the point. Dave told me how dispatch worked and how the schedual would be. 4 on 3 off is the goal, but I think right now some dispatchers are working 5 days a week until they hire a few more. He told me I would probably end up working the 4am-2pm shift, and starting pay was 13.00/hr during training and then 14.50/hr after that. Your benefits start on the first of the following month you are hired, so no 90 day wait. They then had someone drive me to the lab to have a drug test done and then back to the airport to catch my flight home. The whole interview was over pretty quick. I got there at 9am and was done by 1pm. About a week later Francene called me back and asked if I wanted to come to work for Colgan. I accepted and she sent me a packet with all the training information in it. Training lasts about 3 weeks. I just finished the first week. They flew us down to Miami space availible and paid for our hotel room (double occupancy though). The class has about 21 students. 19 pilots and only 2 dispatchers. The first week and a half is basic indock, CRM, flight planning, ect.. The next week and a half is systems.
