Aloha Island Air Pilot Interview:
My inteview started off with doing psychological screening. First it was simple, fill in the sequence of numbers, like 11,22,33,??
It gets progressively more difficult. The next test was a tic-tac-toe grid in which they flash numbers, and you have to put them as they showed up in the grid. Then it gets difficult as they put the sequence in the grid and one is missing so you see which one is missing, and then you try put the sequence in the grid in order.
The last test is simple, but weird. You are shown series of color words in different colors (i.e. word BLUE written in yellow), and the test measures your ability to answer what color is the word written in.
After that came the written test. It was a pretty straightforward 25 question basic weather, multiengine aerodynamics, METAR/TAF stuff.
Then came the HR/Technical interview with Joe Edwards-our D.0. and Phyllis Torres - our HR Manager. Both are super nice people.
The interview is pretty simultaneous. I'm gonna try to list as many as I can remember:
Technical:
- What do you need for a visual approach?
- How do you land in right crosswind?
- Brief the VOR-DME A to Kapalua/West Maui approach which we're the only ones authorized to shoot. Also, missed approach procedure once you've started the circling maneuver. Just remember to turn away from the mountain. Apparently, this is where many people bust the interview.
- Define CRM
- Systems on the airplane you are currently flying. I was asked about the landing gear, but some people were asked about electrical.
- Captain during brief tells you he wants to take a dip 50 feet below DH because of massive delays and ticked off passengers. What do you do?
- You are taxiing for takeoff, the tower clears you for takeoff, and you notice smell of alcohol on captain's breath. What do you do?
HR:
- TUA difficult time in your life and how you dealt with it.
- What makes a good leader? What is your leadership style?
- Define First Officer.
- Where do you see yourself in 1 year? In 5 years?
- Are you aware of the cost of living in Hawaii?
- What are your strong points? What are your weaknesses?
There's no more sim ride.
Basically the HR interview is to see whether you are honest or not. They will twist and turn these questions throughout the interview to see whether you are honest or not. So don't try to BS them. Be honest, be yourself, and relax.
This is an awesome job for people with families who don't want to have overnights, but still have an airline job with airline benefits.
