Capital Cargo International Airlines Pilot Interview:
A couple weeks after I mailed my resume to the chief pilot (along with a recommendation), I was called. They said I was invited to a group interview, which is a 2 day process. The interview was scheduled for several weeks in advance, so I had time to figure out how I was going to take time off from my current job to attend the interview. From the get-go, they tell you upfront that you are one of 15-18 pilots that they've invited to the interview, and only something like 7-8 will be chosen for the class, then the others will be placed in a "pool", which they may or may not pick from when the need for future pilots arise. They try to make you understand that in the event you aren't chosen, that you may not get hired, even though they placed you in the pool.
They require you to get yourself down to Orlando Florida on your own dollar. Usually, the interviews are held in the Wingate Hotel, which is very close to the airport. You pay for the first night, then if you are asked to stay for the second day, they will pay for your room on that second night.
The first day, you all go into one of the hotels conference rooms, and they talk about the company and give you an opportinuty to ask any questions. They make you feel very at ease. Then, they give you a silly written test (just random questions from 121 regs, a little systems, etc) They let you go into the common area of the hotel to complete the test. They say that you can do it alone or with each other, but they remind you that you there are only a certain number of pilots they are going to hire, so if you help somebody else on the test, you may be helping them get hired instead of you.
While you're taking the tests, they start to call you into the conference room, one by one, for the interview portion. It is a board interview with the Chief Pilot, D.O., and Chief Flight Engineer. They ask you maybe one system question, (they know you're a pilot and you can fly because you're applying for a 727 job, so they don't dwell on embarassing you by putting you on the spot like that.) Mainly they're getting to know you. They ask about your family, about your current job, about difficult experiences in your life, basically a straightforward interview. They also go over some scenereos about if you're asked to work 2 back to back assignments. (meaning will you work 4 weeks straight if you are assigned to because of your low seneority). Just say yes, and tell them what they want to hear. After that, you go back out to finish your test, then the next pilot is called in. You break for lunch around noon, and they go out to eat with the group which is pretty cool. After lunch, they finish the interviews, grade the tests, and spend about an hour or so in the conference room, I guess deciding who they want to hire. during this time, you can watch tv or go up to your room and take a nap.
Then they call you all into the conference room and read off the names of who was chosen to stay for the next day. The pilots who's names were not read were told that they were placed in a pool, and will be called for the next class, but like I said earlier, they aren't promising anthing to them.
The next day was the simulators. It's like all other sims in the world, basically no big deal. Theyre not wanting to see you fly ATP standards, just see how you react to the sim, crew environment, and make sure you keep the dirty side down.
You take off, normal climb, do a few turns each direction (no big deal, they talk and joke with you during this whole thing)
then they clear you to a closeby vor and you hold. very basic. you then depart the vor on a heading, and they vector you to intercept an ILS. They take away your visibility and make you go around (no big deal, they talk you thru it) and vector you around for another landing. Sometime on downwind leg, they pull an engine. You fly a visual approach, with one engine out. it's no big deal because it's clear and a million. Given you don't crash, they get everybody into a group and say that you're hired. (pending drug/alcohol tests, etc) They tell you your class date and give you ample time to put in your 2 weeks notice at whereever you're working.
Good luck, I was hired at this company and am very happy here.
