Empire Airlines Pilot Interview:
They require you to pay your own way to get there. The interview is in Coeur d'Alene so if you can jump seat go to Spokane. Rent a car and drive to the interview. First you meet with H.R. Manager. Very nice lady who asks the usual questions. Why do you want to work here, what are your goals, tell a story about how and when you got into flying and continue the story until present job. I have a fair amount of experience and she was suprised that I had interest in them. She kept wanting to know why I would consider going from DC-8 F.O. to captain in the F-27. She was very suspicious about my long term viability there. I was furloughed, and was very straight up with her that I had long term plans about a major but in light of the current airlines situation, I felt captain for a 121 cargo airline is better for me and them than first officer with a fractional or commuter. She seemed pleased with the answer. This job requires a Monday night thru Saturday morning schedule with you home all day at your base. So it requires you to move to domicile if you want to see your family. Then seperate interview with a pilot type. Mine was with a training captain of 18 years seniority. Very laid back and friendly no questions about your airplane just what you been doing how it is going at your present employer and so on. The only technical questions were a few Jepp pages with the what is this, what does that mean. No questions on AIM or FAR. No past aircraft systems. Real basic and honest. no tricks. Then you go back to Spokane and do a Sim Eval on a Frasca 169 ment to be a Baron 58. Take off to an altitude at an airspeed then level off and fly around to get the feel. then 360 left and right at 45 bank. Then vectors to hold as published on localizer at Coeur d'Alene. Enter and hold then clearence to do a vor approach and then miss as published. This was a weird missed and if you are fast on the go around you will turn inside of the radial to intercept like I did. Once you demonstrate you know what is going on then vectors for an NDB, miss then he froze it and put me 5 miles out of the OM and gave me the ILS with a full stop. Thorough but fair. My eval had the sim with the elevator trim stuck with full down 98 percent of the time. This made it hard but of course was a good reason for some of my falts. They say they took that into consideration and will call me in for a class at the begining of the new year if I have not found someting better. They seemed to have low self esteme. Just a sign of the past hiring spree. I suspect that will change when everyone gets furloughed. This position requires an 18 month training contract. 12 month for the caravan. 43000 first year with co pay on medical. They are a FED EX feeder with FED EX aircraft and Fed EX is paying for the training. They mentioned FED EX is looking at more modern turbo props to replace the F-27. No word yet on that just looking. With a rental car you can get to a motel 6 close to Spokane airport or if you get there a day early can take the public bus to and from Spokane Airport to the front door of the motel 6 for 50 cents like I did the first day. It saved me one days rental. Good luck to all.
