2 phase interview: 1st phase: total time about 2 to 2 1/2 hours about equally split between the three different interviewers/panels. First meet with Director of Personell Joan Kraft. What do you know about NAA? Why do you want to work here? What distinguishes you from everyone else that's applying to work here? Tell me about yourself, your background, how you got started in flying? Are you a check airman? Have you ever had a problem with another crewmember, tell me about it, how did you resolve the problem? Where do you live, how long a drive is it from NY, are you willing to move to NY? Next meet with a three pilot board for a non-technical interview. Pretty much the exact same questions as were asked by Joan. Have you ever used an FMC? Have you ever had any difficulty in training? Are you furloughed from any airline with recall rights? Are you willing to give up your seniority number at the airline that your are on furlough from? Will you move to NY, what will you do with your house where you live now? Have you ever had an accident or incident? Tell us details about your incident (gear wouldn't come down, performed all emergency extension procedures to no avail, declared an emergency, landed gear up, that's what happened in a nutshell but they wanted to hear the "whole story"). How did you like working for XYZ Airlines (the one that I'm furloughed from). Tell me something that you liked, something that you didn't like. Finally met with another three person pilot panel that included the chief pilot, for a technical interview. Tell me the memory items for an engine fire after takeoff in the 737 (hadn't flown it in seven months). Tell me the memory items for an engine fire after takeoff in the plane you're flying now. What happens in the 737 when you pull the fire "T" handle? After you shut down an engine and accomplish the appropriate memory items and the situation is under control what should you do next (declare an emergency). They pulled out an approach plate, I think for the ILS 1 something at San Diego - asked all sorts of things about the route I'd fly and altitudes if cleared for an approach from a particular point. Had me brief the approach. At the end of this interview I was escorted back to the director of personell's office for a "how did it go", told when I should expect to hear something from them and thanked for my time. Overall it was a very layed back pleasant experience. 2nd phase: A week later I was called back for a second interview, this time with the President of the company (he personally interviews all of the prospective pilots, that is those that have been recommended by the first phase interviewers for a job. It lasted about 30 minutes, some of the same questions. Wanted lots of details though in my answers. After I was finished telling a "story" he would ask for more details. Still a very layed back interview. After it was done, was escorted back to director of personell's office where you wait a couple minutes for the final word. I was offerred a job when she came back in, given a company policy and procedures manual, a parking lot sticker and card to get into the employee lot. A medical was set up for me the following morning at JFK. Took all morning, though more time was spent waiting than actually getting examined. Still it was quite comprehensive. Vision with color test, audiometer (the kind in a sound proof booth), EKG, blood tests, etc.
