Interview experience:
I talked with the chief pilot, director of flight operations, and two human resources personnel. The phone interview lasted about 30 minutes. Some of the questions were: Tell me about a time when you were professionally recognized or honored. What can you bring to Northern Air Cargo? What do you know about Northern Air Cargo? If you were a captain and the first officer showed up late and really tired one day after another, how would you handle the situation? Do you use Jeppesen charts? What is the circle in the upper right hand corner? What are the standard minimums for Cat I approaches? Tell me about your flying experience. Tell me about a time when you had a close call because of something you did wrong. We want to hear a good story here. Are you OK with working two weeks on, then two off in the lower 48 (continental US)? They’ll give you plenty of time for questions. I had lots because there was no posting here or anywhere about NAC.
Company info: They’re hiring primarily to staff the ACMI flying they’re HOPING to get in the lower 48. They mentioned a possible pilot base in Laredo, TX. Currently crews are spending 2 weeks at a time down there on duty on the company’s dime (hotel and per diem paid). They hope to change this soon. Currently they’re doing charter work out of the lower 48 and are hoping staff another aircraft with hopes that they secure more flying. They did mention in the interview the possibility of being on furlough (although they claim they don’t foresee it happening). Senior pilots bid Anchorage and fly throughout AK in their 121 scheduled cargo airline. An ATP is required per their ops specs. Ground school is done in ANC. Sim training in ATL on Delta’s 737 sim. Schedules are bid on seniority. Average 12 days / month off. Anchorage pilots are home every night (no overnights). July 19, 2010 They anticipate another class before fall. Each class will probably be 4 pilots.
