Trans States Airlines Pilot Interview:
The day I interviewed with TSA there were like 11 of us who
were there. I arrived at 8:30 for the 9:00 show time. I went in and started filling out the application, it's a good idea to get there early, but they let you continue filling it out between interviews and sim rides. We were greated by three captains, one who was on the ATR, another the Jetstream, and another who was I think an ATR guy, not sure though. They were really nice and gave a great overview of life at Trans States. After that thye passed out a 50 question ATP multiple choice test. It's straight out of the ATp so if you study it you shouldn't have any worries. I was first up for the sim ride
to be immediatly followed by a the interview. The sim is a Frasca 142, and it is alot more pitch sensitive than I remember the one at SIU being. They gave me a profile to fly which included taking off, steep turns, followed by a clearance to an approach fix. They give you instructions to hold as published. It was an ILS approach into MCI. After you tell them the entry they may or may not have you do it. I was told to hold and spun around once. Then they give you the approach clearance and you shoot the ILS. Listen to their instructions on power settings. It helped me out a bunch, and try to
trim it out as best you can for the glideslope. After that was finished I went upstairs asat down with the ATR guy, who was very cordial and relaxing. The most technical question I got was some questions on Jepp approach plates....ie symbology for displaced threshold, runway distance on land and hold short operations, airport beacon symbol. He also asked the usual background questions and why do you want to work for TSA? It was over in a few short minutes and I was out the door at 11:00 a.m. Very care free atmosphere and they are in need of pilots, running a ground school every two
weeks now. Mine starts in late March can't wait!
