United Parcel Service Pilot Interview:

Very straight forward interview process. You pay your own way (airfare and hotel). Stayed at the Holiday Inn, (I-64)Hurstbourne in Louisville. You'll get the $42 UPS rate on request. Nice place. Started the morning in the 727 simulator. You can pick whether to sit in the left or right seat. Very simple profile: you give a takeoff brief, then fly an area departure, runway heading to 3K, left turn to interecept a radial, climb to 5K. (Gouge power settings and required calls given to you in a binder prior to the brief. You can memorize them in a couple of minutes). At altitude turn to a cardinal heading, 250 KIAS, he'll give you steep turns (30 and 45 degrees). Then he'll set you up on the localizer for a raw data ILS approach. You'll brief it then fly it down to DH. Execute the missed approach as published and it's over. You'll debrief for 5 minutes and then get cut loose for a few hours as you wait for your HR interview in the afternoon. Some guys purchased an hour of 727 sim time prior to the interview, however, I fly a similar aircraft and did not and did not think I needed to. If you haven't flown a big jet before it may be worth your time.

HR person comes and gets you in the lobby at interview time. Her name was Paige. Nice looking lady and very friendly. Also in the room was a MD-11 line pilot. Former Air Force, and also a real nice guy. They'll explain to you that you're very qualified or you wouldn't be there. Relax, be honest, and let them get to know you.

Standard questions will be thrown at you......TMAAT you had to correct someone at work or in the cockpit.....TMAAT you were counseled on your performance....Tell us how you are a leader at work.....Tell us why the person who recommended you at UPS did so and what would he say about you......What do you bring to UPS and why do you want to work here......Tell us about the company!! You must go on their website and research the company prior to the interview. They are BIG on candidates knowing about UPS and what UPS's strategic vision is for the future (expanding markets in China and Europe, global partnerships, supply chain logistics, etc).......Know the company....how many jets they have and what types, how many pilots they have, total number of employees, etc. Again, very straight forward and laid back. That's it. They'll contact you by letter in 2-4 weeks.
