Stayed a few days at the Hilton LAX, about a 5 minute drive from the airport. Very nice place, but with it comes a few problems. Hotel staff was very friendly, rooms were nice with the pool and 4 hot tubs on the third floor. Internet was 9.95 for a 24 hour period. Two restaurants in the hotel - A sports bar (We get a 20 percent discount) and a fancy Italian place which I didn't check out.
They also had a deli open 24 hours - pre made sandwiches and coffee, pricey but not bad. Paying 10 bucks for the internet and high food prices were a turnoff. As with fancier hotels, there is very little that is free or inexpensive.
It also seems this hotel gets a lot of international travelers. Be prepared for long shuttle lines and long check in lines.

Left out of the hotel, about a block and a half up (Past the adult bookstore) there is a gas station and a Denny's. Not a bad place to walk in the daytime, but I was warned by the doorman to be careful at night. They've had a few muggings/robberies recently.

Ask the conceirge located by the front desk of things to do. All the employees here seemed really friendly, and I did see shuttle information to Santa Monica, but never asked about it.
