We've Aviation Professionals Prepare for their Interviews!
  • I applied to Tradewind using their online job application as soon as the First Officer position opened  this year. I received an email from one of their pilot recruiters several weeks later asking to arrange an HR screening. We discussed my flight experience to date on Microsoft Teams. The second round of interviews consisted of a technical interview via Microsoft Teams. I studied for this interview as I did for my instrument practical test. I also practiced briefing instrument approaches and tried to ask myself questions about various instrument procedures in the northeastern United States. I also reviewed weather theory and about weather products, as I was expected to know not only the "rote-level" knowledge, but I was also expected to apply these concepts to different scenarios....

HR interview was very straightforward. Standard HR questions. Technical was heavy IFR. Know your pitot static/gyroscoping instruments as well. Approaches, CRAFT clearances, Untowered/towered ops. Airspeed restrictions. They will let you know if you pass the Technical on the spot. Then Sim, (view the Sim/Scenario section in the study guide of this website).  If you pass the sim you will then speak with the someone from operations. This is the most important part, and will make or break...

The first round was informative and conversational, covering compensation, benefits, company details, and a few HR-style questions. Expect to discuss your flight hours and overall experience. The second round was very much like an instrument checkride, with multiple clearances, ATIS copies, and layered scenarios. Strong IFR knowledge is essential, as the focus is on decision-making and your ability to identify missing information. The tone was professional and the interviewer was kind, but...

Study guide hit it pretty on the head. HR interview then technical a week later followed by a sim a week or two later. Every interview started with why TW. First two interviews are virtual, followed by the sim in CT. HR is pretty straight forward, TMBT, why TW... Technical was very situational based. Everything started with a metar and craft clearance. There would be abnormalities in the situation given to you on purpose to see if you would catch them. Pitot Static System, non towered ops,...

Pretty much followed everyone else's responses! HR interview was very straight forward on my background, hours, and "why Tradewind?". Technical interview was IFR heavy but also quite straight forward. Touched on six-pack stuff, alternates, taking off out of uncontrolled fields, departure procedures, climb gradients, and chart symbology. Also a few scenario based questions that were external pressure aligned ie important client but not enough fuel, Captain comes in drunk. Desktop sim is now a...

Overall I had a great interview experience. Everyone was very nice and made me feel comfortable. For the technical study like an instrument checkride. Like everyone has already said, review DP's, STARs, approach plates, where to find things like alternate and takeoff mins. Be ready to copy the ATIS and the CRAFT clearance then brief a departure and an approach. The sim was simple. Make sure you have the speeds and configurations...

HR was straight forward and quick. The interviewer was very nice and we set up the technical for the following week. The technical was much simpler than expected. Study like an instrument checkride and review departures. Discussed pitot static and vacuum system. Be ready to copy clearances and ATIS. Sim interview went smoothly. The sim is very nice, a g1000 pc12 sim. Better than expected, still very touchy since it’s a sim but it was lots of fun to get in there. Everyone I spoke to was...

Technical interview is as mentioned by other interviewees- read the study guide, go through the approach plates and study mock IFR instrument.  It was very scenario based but the interviewer was very nice and professional- they are looking for a very solid and through IFR Knowledge, so being prepared is very...

HR was very straightforward as previously stated on this website. Technical was super procedural/IFR heavy. Just be able to brief approaches/arrivals/departures. Sim is a sim. Super touchy, not realistic at all, but they were really looking for task management and to see if you were going to correct your mistakes or be a...

  11. It was very helpful to be able to focus my studies and simulator practice on specific areas, rather than feel overwhelmed over studying every possible bit of aeronautical knowledge.

This website is an invaluable tool for ensuring preparedness for technical interviews and simulator evaluations. The feedback from other pilots allowed me to narrow my focus on specific knowledge topics and stick-and-rudder skills when preparing for the interviews, helping me to maximize the time I devoted to preparation while working a full-time job. Thank you to all who have helped me land a job!
