Cathay Pacific Pilot Interview:
I received a call in the middle of the night from company headquarters in Hong Kong inviting me for an interview.
The interview was a one day session lasting about two hours in their city ticket office in lower Manhattan. Travel arrangements were not provided although if invited to phase two they do bring you there and put you up.
You start by taking a timed (30 minutes), twenty five question, multiple choice aviation knowledge test. The questions seemed to be geared toward heavy aircraft so check out some of the publications available on that subject. I have several years flying widebodies and found it to be pretty easy plus there was no math. The flight engineer test prep book would also be helpful.
Next they call you in a conference room and two pilots ask you questions for fourty five minutes to an hour. One pilot went over your application and talked about your experience. They asked several times if you would be willing to relocate to Hong Kong. The job is for a North America based 747 freighter pilot but you have the option of bidding to the passenger side after no less than three years, that usually requires relocation to HKG. I got the feeling they did not want to see any wavering in your commitment to eventually move. The second pilot asked technical questions about an aircraft you have flown (you pick). He also spent a lot of time asking about TCAS operations and EGPWS, know what you can about those two systems. They both wanted to know what you knew about Cathay particularly their fleet and engine choice. They seemed to be devout Rolls Royce fans. I studied up on their history mostly on their website. There are a couple of books available on the history of Cathay Pacific and they came in handy.
It would be a great opportunity to work for one of the most prestigious and highest paying carriers in the world. They just announced the purchase of six more aircraft which is almost a 10% increase in hulls, not bad considering the average US carrier has shrank by over 15% in the last six months. Good luck!
